Fight Report

Prelims:

Thiago Tavares defeats Sam Stout by unanimous decision

Close fight here.  Tavares did a good job in the first round of taking Stout down on multiple occasions.  From then on the fight became almost entirely stand-up based though.  The second round was very close with A Tavares head kick which left Stout bleeding from a cut above his ear being the most notable moment.   In the third round it was close again until the final stages when Stout finally hurt Tavares with a right hand.  He pressed forward urgently looking for a finish, catching Tavares with a big uppercut and another straight right, but though clearly in trouble Tavares was able to make it to the final bell and claimed the decision victory.

Gabriel Gonzaga defeats Ednaldo Oliveira by submission (rear-naked choke) at 3.22mins of Rd1

Gonzaga went back to his roots tonight, using his superior grappling ability to claim a first round victory.  After a feeling out process on the feet in the opening minutes Gonzaga swooped in for the takedown and dumped Oliveira down on the mat.  Oliviera briefly got back to his feet, but Gonzaga applied to a trip to get him back down.  Oliveira looked out of his depth on the mat and before long Gonzaga had his back and seized his neck, forcing the tap.

Yuri Alcantara defeats Michihiro Omigawa by unanimous decision (30-27 x2, 29-28)

Alcantara won this fight with his performance in the first two rounds.  The opening five minutes in particular was huge for him, appearing to have Omigawa hurt on a couple of occasions in the stand-up, and then in the closing minute of the round when he found himself on his back in a grappling battle and slickly threw up an armbar that was extremely tight, with only the bell saving Omigawa from either being tapped out or going home with a broken limb.  Alcantara also bagged the second, but tired in the third which gave Omigawa a chance, but he was running out of steam himself and couldn’t find a way to hurt Alcantara either on the ground or the stand-up.

Mike Pyle defeats Ricardo Funch by TKO at 1.22mins of Rd1

Pyle made short work of Funch, feeding him a solid right straight early in the fight that clearly hurt Funch and sent him staggering backwards.  Pyle pressed forward immediately and launched a right knee which connected flush to the face of Funch and dropped him to the canvas followed by a few punches to finish the job.

Felipe Arantes defeats Antonio Carvalho by unanimous decision (29-28 x3)

Carvalho had the better of the opening round as he used his superior BJJ skills to dictate the fight on the mat. Strangely he opted not to continue with that strategy in the second round and Arantas took advantage, getting the better of Carvalho in the striking department, though he wasn’t able to land anything too damaging. Into the third and in the early stages Carvalho was again coming off second best in the stand-up. realizing he needed to change things up he pulled guard, but it didn’t pay off as Arantes appeared comfortable from top control and worked some effective ground and pound, opening up cuts on both sides of his opponent’s face, and as the fight drew into the closing stages it became clear that Arantes was en-route to a decision victory.
