The UFC are going all out to make their final FOX event of the year on December 8th a big one with three major fights on the main card which will be headlined by a lightweight title fight.
Ben Henderson, who’s coming off a successful title defense against Frankie Edgar on pay-per-view this past Saturday night, will now look to fend off a new challenge from Nate Diaz who earned the No.1 contender spot with a win over Jim Miller at ‘UFC On FOX 3′ back in May.
As had previously been reported, UFC legend BJ Penn and rising welterweight star Rory MacDonald will also feature on the card.
Those two fights alone would have made the free card a must-see, but the UFC have gone the extra mile by adding another massive fight as te co-main event with Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua returning to FOX after his recent win over Brandon Vera to face Sweden’s high-flying Alexander Gustafsson in what’s likely to be a No.1 contender fight at 205lbs.
That’s a line-up that would look good on PPV, so the fact that it’s being offered up for free on FOX shows the UFC’s determination to reverse the recent trend of low ratings for their shows on the network.
They’ve twice drew aprox 2.4 million viwers in a primetime Saturday night slot – down more than 50% from the average audience they pulled over the course of their first two events.
Hopefully by offering up a title fight that will encourage FOX to offer the same level of promotion they did for the only other time the UFC have put a belt on the line for the network when Cain Velasquez and Junior Dos Santos fought for the heavyweight strap at ‘UFC On FOX 1′.
