With so much riding on tonight’s ‘UFC On FOX’ event it would have been unthinkable for either headline star to have pulled out injured on short notice, but yet backstage reports suggest it may not have been that far off becoming a reality.
Backstage after the fight it emerged that both new champion Junior Dos Santos and Cain Velasquez were fighting despite knee injuries suffered in training.
At the post-fight press conference Dos Santos admitted he hadn’t been at 100% going into the fight, but didn’t elaborate except to acknowledge it was a problem with his knee.
Later however he revealed to reporters that he had tore the miniscus in his knee just 11 days before the bout during jiu-jitsu practice and had been reduced to using crutches for a couple of days.
That resulted in him spending the last week of his training camp attempting to rehabilitate his knee as best he could while doing cardio work in a pool to minimize the risk of causing more damage.
Cain Velasquez also tried to downplay his own injury woes post-fight, but according to UFC color-commentator in an interview with Ariel Helwani after the event he too had a knee issue.
Rogan claims that he “knows for a fact” that Velasquez had torn his knee and had a cortisone injection prior to the bout.
In the 24 hours leading up to the fight some pundits had questioned whether Velasquez was carrying some kind of injury given that he had weighed in for the fight heavier than usual and looked somewhat softer around the mid-section than we’re used to seeing from a fighter who’s considered one of the best conditioned athletes in the sport.
