We thought we had seen the last of the 45 year old baseball buffoon Jose Canseco, but perhaps not if new comments from Scott Coker are to be believed.

A few weeks ago the Strikeforce CEO seemed to have shut the door on the possibility of Canseco appearing in the promotion, stating with conviction, “That’s not going to happen.”

Now he appears to have changed his tune slightly.

“I can tell you this: If Cesar Gracie says to me, ‘Jose’s training with me, I’m going to get him ready, and I’m going to do it in four or five months,’ and Cesar’s telling me this? That will have a lot of weight on what we decide,” Coker told mmajunkie.

Cesar Gracie himself appeared to confirm to the site that Coker is now interested in Canseco.

“Scott said if Jose wants to train, he’ll put him in a Challenger series (event) if it’s not the Herschel Walker fight,” Gracie said. “There are a couple of other organizations that are interested in Jose that I’m meeting with next week.”

The idea of Jose Canseco and Herschel Walker, two men with a combined MMA record of 1-1 and a combined age of  92,  fighting in Strikeforce is a complete embarrassment to the sport.  Even letting Canseco onto the Challenger Series – an event designed to promote up-and-coming talent – reflects very badly on the promotion.

I may not have been overly impressed with the UFC for signing 41 year old James Toney, but at least we know that man can fight, and has a legitimate skill in a sport that is relevant for MMA.

Canseco on the other hand is just a pollution that Strikeforce would be well advised to steer clear of.
